Pre-Seeded WiFi credentials do not result in a working WiFi connection on a Raspberry Pi Zero 2W, possibly other variants

Featured Replies

I am using Armbian Imager. If I pre-seed a profile with WiFi credentials (SSID, Password) the Pi Zero 2W cannot connect to the SSID on the access point upon first (or any subsequent) boot. The issue seems to be that when the WiFi credentials are pre-seeded, an

"auth:"

stanza is not produced in the .yaml netplan configuration file and a connection cannot be made. Running

armbian-config

and re-configuring the network fixes the problem.

Netplan .yaml from pre-seeded information (does not create a connection):

network:
  version: 2
  renderer: networkd
  wifis:
    wlan0:
      dhcp4: true
      dhcp6: true
      access-points:
        "WIFI_SSID":
           password: "WIFI_PASSWORD"

Netplan .yaml after running armbian-config (Connection created - works):

network:
  version: 2
  renderer: networkd
  wifis:
    wlan0:
      dhcp4: true
      dhcp6: true
      access-points:
        "WIFI_SSID":
          auth:
            key-management: "psk"
            password: "WIFI_PASSWORD"

I would have filed a bug report on github, but I was not sure what component of Armbian has the issue.
