ebin-dev
After the update from kernel 4.19.20 to 4.19.41 my V5_0_1 Espresso does not boot successfully anymore (see log). It produces a kernel panic after 10 s: "Internal error: synchronous parity or ECC error". @Igor Please disable the update to kernel 4.19.41 for the next-stable branch. ManoftheSea
I'm perhaps a little late in contributing to this thread, but after a power outage caused a reboot of mine, I was getting nothing in kernel log just after systemd started in kernel .40. I tried reverting kernel packages, and had failures with linux-image-next-mvebu64_5.83.190502_arm64.deb and linux-image-next-mvebu64_5.84.190508_arm64.deb, but success with .34 (that is, armbian 78.190409) No panic message, just a stop of logging to serial. This weekend, I will try the latest next again and capture the log, maybe someone might find it useful.

ManoftheSea
I had hoped the information might be useful for bisecting which kernel update might be responsible. Is the source of the problem known and fixed, or is the fix being referenced only disabling the 5.85 release? Is it useful for me to search for the older nightlies and narrow it down? Let's wait for other people input. @Igor Switching to the newer kernel 4.19.46 (and probably to 5.1 too) is possible without negatively affecting system performance if the new boot loader is downgraded to 800_800 beforehand (600_600 for some V7 users): I have just switched from next stable (ARMBIAN 5.73 stable Debian GNU/Linux 9 (stretch) 4.19.20-mvebu64 ) to next-nightly (ARMBIAN 5.87.190526 nightly Debian GNU/Linux 9 (stretch) 4.19.46-mvebu64). This process runs smoothly if I downgrade the new boot loader from 1000_800 to 800_800 beforehand - V5_0_1 EspressoBins are stable with this configuration (I don't own a V7 EspressoBin for testing purposes). Kernel 4.19.46 would appear to include the pending cpufreq patch - the new boot loader is currently not able to establish a stable system with a true CPU clock of 1000MHz. However, system performance is not negatively affected, since the true CPU clock is still running at 800MHz in this configuration: # kernel 4.19.46 and bootloader 800_800 # 7zr b 7-Zip (a) [64] 16.02 : Copyright (c) 1999-2016 Igor Pavlov : 2016-05-21 p7zip Version 16.02 (locale=en_US.UTF-8,Utf16=on,HugeFiles=on,64 bits,2 CPUs LE) LE CPU Freq: 791 794 794 794 793 794 793 793 RAM size: 990 MB, # CPU hardware threads: 2 RAM usage: 441 MB, # Benchmark threads: 2 Compressing | Decompressing Dict Speed Usage R/U Rating | Speed Usage R/U Rating KiB/s % MIPS MIPS | KiB/s % MIPS MIPS 22: 718 148 472 699 | 17428 193 770 1488 23: 705 147 488 719 | 17062 192 769 1477 24: 701 148 511 754 | 17395 199 769 1527 25: 692 150 528 790 | 17198 199 770 1531 ---------------------------------- | ------------------------------ Avr: 148 499 741 | 196 770 1506 Tot: 172 635 1123

Patches has been adjusted. Do we have a solution for CPU temperature? Warning notice: With newer kernels >= 4.19.4x, I would recommend 600_600 or 800_800 (1000_800 for testing purposes only). 1200_750 should be avoided at least for V7 EspressoBins, they may be bricked. System performance is the same with kernel 4.19.46 and 800_800 compared to kernel 4.19.20 and 1000_800, since the cpufreq patch is applied to the newer kernel, it still runs with a true CPU clock of 800 MHz. CPU temperature: I can't test V7 EspressoBins - but I think they come with a heat sink. They should not stay at the Marvell>> prompt for too long, since DVFS is not active and they run at 100% CPU frequency at this stage. I don't have any problems with V5 EspressoBins if they are passively cooled, though. Edit: thanks for the adjustments in config/kernel/linux-mvebu64-next.config. But I am not sure if it is necessary to apply the (Armbian) cpufreq patch to kernel 4.19.46 - it may not work if those files were already patched upstream. Edit: Also the latest beta works fine (ARMBIAN 5.88.190606 nightly Debian GNU/Linux 9 (stretch) 4.19.48-mvebu64)

odoll
I know it's not you to blame, but it's again disappointing with a GlobalScale product, which I bought as *up* to 1.2 GHz, just to find, that it's not even good enough to scale down to 1000/800, but even down to 800/800 to get a stable service.
glaucioklipel
Hi, just got my espressobin v7 and choose 1200_750 ddr4 image, later then I end up in here and see the warning about the bricking chance on this image with v7. I'll get into this issue tomorrow again but by now it would be a relief if you could tell me that the rescue tips actually works for this case, would it? Didn't try it yet... Thanks in advance. glaucioklipel
Solved, got in UART mode and flashed the correct image.
dasbee
Greetings. I've been working to bring-up a V7 espressobin. The boot-up issues, widely reported, affected me and I have installed the 600/600 version of uboot which seems to make the system boot reliably. I'm wondering what is known about this issue. Do we have a root cause of the startup issues? For example, is this hardware like a drooping power supply, or perhaps sloppy routing of the DDR lines affecting timing. Or do we think we're seeing a specific u-boot issue? I'd be glad to tinker with uboot to see exactly where the boot-up is failing. So, to this end. My first question is where can we find the sources and patches to uboot. Searching hasn't turned up anything other than the download links for pre-built binaries. The second question is less clear. I've seen quite a few messages that imply that GlobalScale has a poor track record with building reliable hardware. The specs on this board with 3xGigabit ethernet and a cost under $100 is hard to match. To me, the lower clock speed isn't of particular concern as long as it can saturate the ethernet links. But, if there is a concrete reason to suspect the hardware, well, this is the time to reconsider. Any help will be appreciated.
ManoftheSea
@dasbee - "saturate the ethernet links" but there's only a single gigabit SERDES to the ethernet switch, so any traffic that has to go to the CPU is limited below the 1 Gbps of the ethernet links. Fair enough. It depends on how I configure the routing, to be sure. This is going to be much more capable than a raspberry PI in a like configuration which was the other likely candidate. While I could configure a PI4 as a single-armed router, the EB design provides for more direct routing configuration.
Pali
@odoll: This is not Globalscale issue, but rather Marvell issue as it affects all A3720 boards, not only Espressobin. See for more details my post: https://forum.armbian.com/topic/10429-how-to-make-espressobin-v7-stable/?do=findComment&comment=110302 There are new kernel patches which should address this issue: https://lore.kernel.org/linux-arm-kernel/20201009125711.0176752a@kernel.org/ Could you test them if they fixes instability also of your Espressobin?
