eibinger Posted May 11, 2022 Posted May 11, 2022 Armbianmonitor: http://ix.io/3XvQ board ist lafrite with 512mb, 8gb emmc tried all possible ports for i2c. first by configuring with armbian-config and activating i2c port a and b. then manual by writing an overlay to activate i2c_ao and deactivate the uart on pins 3+5; also tried pins 27+28; i2cdetect -y bus-nr (0, 1) never detected anything; i2cdetect -l gave me correct ports; i2cdetect -y for the hdmi-port allways worked. 0 Quote
TonyMac32 Posted May 12, 2022 Posted May 12, 2022 Please provide logs/dmesg/ armbianmonitor -u output so we can have some idea of what if anything is going on in the kernel. If it's U-boot related and you have a serial UART for debug, that would also be helpful information. 0 Quote

eibinger Posted May 20, 2022 Author Posted May 20, 2022 I finally found a solution for i2c_a on pins 27+28. I used the following script to activate i2c_a: /dts-v1/; / { compatible = "amlogic,meson-gxbb"; fragment@0 { target-path = "/aliases"; __overlay__ { i2cA = "/soc/bus@c1100000/i2c@8500"; }; }; fragment@1 { target-path = "/soc/bus@c1100000/i2c@8500"; __overlay__ { status = "okay"; pinctrl-0 = <0x7b>; pinctrl-names = "default"; }; }; }; This was generated out of the original overlay meson-i2cA.dtbo which is activated by armbian-config. The only changes I made are the two "pinctrl" lines. Until now I am not able to activate i2c_ao on pins 3+5. If somebody can confirm a working i2c-bus on these pins it would be a big help for me. Pins 3+5 are widely used by shields compatible with raspberry pi and I would prefer using them instead of 27+28. 0 Quote
Da Xue Posted August 4, 2022 Posted August 4, 2022 The I2C pins for pin 3 and 5 are actually the GPIO_AO UART pins. You have to use software gpio-bitbang for I2C on those pins. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1pAtz8v2gnkkrAdNrhhrpICkTNQ8cd1ObduUsphcbqp4/edit#gid=0 0 Quote
eibinger Posted November 23, 2022 Author Posted November 23, 2022 @Da XueThank you for your answer. I finally was able to enable gpio-bitbang for the pins 3 and 5 by the linux i2c-gpio driver. Still it does not work. I can use this software i2c on any gpio pins but not on these two. I also tried to deactivate the serial@4c0 by writing an overlay with status="disabled" for this device to free these pins - still no luck. Is there a way to disable the uart on pins 3+5 and use them as gpio pins? 0 Quote
Da Xue Posted December 8, 2022 Posted December 8, 2022 Need to see your actual overlay. But I would test the overlay first by just disabling serial and then using gpioset to test those GPIOs first. Then worry about bitbang I2C driver. Not familiar with Armbian's dt overlay system myself. 0 Quote
eibinger Posted December 12, 2022 Author Posted December 12, 2022 i2c-ao-gpio.dtsThat is the overlay I used to activate i2c with bitbang over linux kernel. I also tried to only disable the uart on ao and it was possible to switch the two pins with gpioset. So I think it should be possible to use i2c with a userland driver that works directly with the two pins. Still it is not possible to use software bitbang driver from the kernel. I tested this on two other pins and it worked. 0 Quote
Igor Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 It should work with 5.10.y, on 5.19.y (probably on 6.x too) is broken. 0 Quote
eibinger Posted December 16, 2022 Author Posted December 16, 2022 I checked this with kernel version 5.10 and the result is the same as with kernel 6.0. I can use the kernel driver i2c-gpio on other gpio pins (for instance 37 and 40) but not on pins 3 and 5. I attached the overlay which worked for pins 37 and 40, the lines with 3 and 5 are commented out. i2c-xx-gpio.dts 0 Quote
