strongtz Posted June 29, 2020 Posted June 29, 2020 I guess the device tree in the mainline kernel has some problems. Now I'm using Ubuntu Server 20.04 with the following device tree. Basically everything works, except for USB PD. (The OS was installed using iso with u-boot's EFI implementation) Here is the boot log. frauhottelmann Posted July 1, 2020 Posted July 1, 2020 If anyone is interested: I designed a new cover instead of the acrylic plate. I broke it because I tried to drill a hole into it to get access to the power pins: Spoiler I made a new one in Fusion 360 to be 3D-printed or laser cut: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4501621 With it you get access to all pins (power, PCIe, GPIO, serial and SPI) and the reset button. The picture is of version 1. The newer version on thingiverse has larger cutouts and holes. Spoiler 3 Quote

I get a working image out of 20.05 with focal and dev kernel. It stops booting after an upgrade. It hangs on "starting kernel" (console). And if I try to build one on master with dev it doesn't boot at all. I a month ago I only compiled the kernel for my roc-rk3399-pc, using the current branch, while the most recent image I built was 6/6/2020 I currently have this kernel with ubuntu 20.04 LTS: root@roc-rk3399-pc:~ # uname -a Linux roc-rk3399-pc 5.4.44-rockchip64 #trunk SMP PREEMPT Thu Jun 4 17:03:20 UTC 2020 aarch64 aarch64 aarch64 GNU/Linux I have been using my rk as a server for a few months and I have not had any problems, I am using it with an NVME and it works well, I power it with USB C with power delivery. The problem is to build the kernel every month to keep it updated and understand the first time how to configure/compile everything Today I tried to update the kernel by compiling the latest version from the current branch and unfortunately I noticed that docker no longer works with the latest kernel and I had to roll back, from the errors it seems that the support for "cgroup blkio weight" and "cgroup blkio weight_device" has been removed. Anyone know if changes have been made in the default options to build the kernel? I took a look at the commits but saw nothing about this type of change 0 Quote

Today I tried to do the update again and I think I found the real problem even if I still haven't figured out how to solve it. Apparently the kernel update is not working properly and after installing these packages that I have compiled (armbian-config_20.08.0-trunk_all.deb linux-dtb-current-rockchip64_20.08.0-trunk_arm64.deb linux-u-boot-current-roc-rk3399-pc_20.08.0-trunk_arm64.deb armbian-firmware_20.08.0-trunk_all.deb linux-image-current-rockchip64_20.08.0-trunk_arm64.deb) and after restarting this happens to me: root@roc-rk3399-pc:/lib/modules # ls /lib/modules 5.4.53-rockchip64 root@roc-rk3399-pc:/lib/modules # uname -a Linux roc-rk3399-pc 5.4.44-rockchip64 #trunk SMP PREEMPT Thu Jun 4 17:03:20 UTC 2020 aarch64 aarch64 aarch64 GNU/Linux EDIT: I don't know if it can be useful, but before when I used only the SD card it didn't happen to me, but since I mounted an NVME I haven't been able to update the kernel anymore I am using the NVME after copying (cp -Rp) the whole SD card to the NVME and setting the right UUID in the file /boot/armbianEnv.txt SOLVED: After a few attempts I managed to figure out how to fix, after updating the kernel I had to mount the sd card and copy the /boot dir mount /dev/mmcblk0p1 /mnt cp -Rp /boot/* /mnt/boot/ Edited July 25, 2020 by davtur19 added more information and solved 0 Quote
balbes150 Posted September 24, 2020 Posted September 24, 2020 Fix sound HDMI for Renegade Elite 1 Quote
a16bitsysop Posted November 26, 2020 Posted November 26, 2020 I Just did a fresh install from a docker build, and copied onto emmc with armbian-config on my renegade elite. I chose btrfs as the format for the emmc, so it has created a btrfs root partition and ext4 boot partition. I tried to upgrade the kernel using apt but it fails, as the boot partition is full. It seems to have been resized to the exact size of the files when it was copied to emmc. Is this a bug in armbian-config? Is there a way to resize without removing emmc? 0 Quote
RussianNeuroMancer Posted December 17, 2020 Posted December 17, 2020 I struggle to understand what is the current situation with Renegade Elite board. On one hand I see it's not mentioned anywhere on Armbian download page, and packages for this board is not published in Armbian repository. Although building image manually is possible, so this is a bit strange to see this topic in "Bug tracker - supported boards only" subforum instead of Development. Unfortunately, while result image with Linux 5.9 seems to work fine in headless mode - HDMI output doesn't work for me (uboot is visible, then upper side of the screen flicker several times and it become black, that all). It's fine, but I would like to ask other users - do you observe same behaviour on current Armbian images on this board? Was there version that supported HDMI on this board? On other hand there Armbian fork by balbes150. Image based on 5.9 doesn't looks like boot at all, while image based on 5.10rc4 at least trying to display text console via HDMI, but in result rendering is incorrect (text moved around by small waves, as if Dell UP3017 is attached via analog cable, but in fact it's pure HDMI-HDMI connection and this happening only with this board) so it's not much useful for my task either. By looking at locked topic and bugreports like this one it doesn't looks like balbes150 accept reports for anything but for his build scripts (which is totally fine, of course). So I would like ask, how other owners of this boards using it? Is my HDMI issue caused by high display resolution or maybe this is some recent regression on uboot or kernel side? (I can't check board with othder display right now.) Is there image that works for someone? Or there nothing useful for this board besides vendor image from Firefly web-site? 0 Quote

The project was closed off by the support team. They didn't complete sending of hardware (I am out 100$ of gear which they are ignoring me on) and the last update on their IGG is they completed upstreaming all code and have effectively ended the project. To be honest, I never got u-boot to work on this board other than their horrible pre-compiled images which are just used to flash to SD, never got the nvme to work to boot the device. So effectively, this thing is a huge, expensive paperweight for me and just gathering dust in a drawer. This board had so much potential, but Libre and loverpi's horrible after """sales""" support made me just chuck this one up to experience that little indie projects should be overlooked until they mature. 0 Quote

Images with Linux 5.10 on other hand does work, but with rendering artifacts. You are correct about that . It is armbian 20.11 kernel 5.10.0.rc4 - xfce4 - did work like a charm as a desktop. Installed from a server version through tasksel. 0 Quote

Installed from a server version through tasksel. I guess you don't see rendering artifacts because your EDID is different from mine. Dell UP3017 resolution is 2560x1600 - so possibly drm driver trying to initialize output and fail to do so in my case, while for you it works. By the way I found a workaround HDMI issue I getting on vanilla Armbian (first paragraph). 1. Getting text console usable: boot board without HDMI cable attached, and attach cable when boot process is complete. 2. Getting GUI usable: in case of Gnome Shell I had to disable Wayland support in /etc/gdm3/custom.conf - then Xorg re-initialize output during start and it just works. So boot process looks like this: normal uboot, screenflicker, black screen, gdm3 appear on the screen. I wasn't able to found any way to get Wayland session working - screen just stay black. 0 Quote

RussianNeuroMancer Posted January 12, 2021 Posted January 12, 2021 Hi, balbes150! Any idea what could cause the difference in HDMI output behavior I described in the post above. There is also a separate thread about this issue now. 0 Quote
