Pay attention. To properly boot the system to SD card on Odroid N2 you need to switch the startup u-boot was installed on SD\eMMC. (that is, the position that is used in the release of equipment from the plant).

Are you trying to upgrade to a new Armbian release, a new Debian/Ubuntu release, or to a new kernel? Because these are three different things. And obviously there is a way to upgrade each of these.

Remember the Amlogic blobtastrophy. Your board may never have hit 1.9 GHz.

I recommend adding a fan. It's easy to add (this is one of the reasons I paid attention to this model). The body already has a ready-made large hole. It is necessary to disassemble the body and remove the plug and can be easily placed on top of the fan size 90*90 with USB connection. If you use a smaller fan, you can leave the plug and make a hole of the desired size over the radiator.

Check for firmware. Libreelec runs all the hardware. Only the shutdown does not work (the system restarts).

I didn't check. Try dtb from other models.

The core has basic support for Khadas EDGE (the site has an image). I have a full XFCE desktop running on EDGE (no wifi and BT and sound only).

I have long been there, so @amirul was able to run Armbian.

Now checked on Odroid C2 an image 5.76 with MALI and a media script, by a technique with replacement of u-boot, as for K2.
Everything works fine. After installing the script, the standard browser began to play video 1080 full screen without brakes. MPV is just as easy to handle any full-screen video. Bonus has an in-house sound via HDMI. There is one caveat when configuring - it is necessary to specify the correct DTB option in the file for Odroid C2  "/extlinux/extlinux conf".

For those who don't know. The browser has a special additional link for a quick test of full-screen video.

    Just received the Magicsee N6.
Fired it up and WOW, the smoothest android I've seen so far.
    Let's run Armbian and see.

    update: Installed Armbian_5.77_Rk3399-tv_Ubuntu_bionic_default_4.4.154_desktop_20190331 with rk3399-magicsee-n6-max.dtb
Everything works except bluetooth, desktop nice and fluid
Full-screen video smooth, cpu temp in the 80's
Looking good so far  let's try NEXT...no magicsee-n6-max.dtb in the image?

    Install Armbian to eMMC.
    1. Be sure to activate multi-boot using the new image. If multiboot previously activated is required to repeat activation using files in a new image.
    2. Run Armbian from external media, run "ddbr" and create full backup eMMC.
    3. Execute script “/boot/create-mbr-linux.sh”
    3.  install Armbian on eMMC execute script “/root/install.sh”.

Please note, this is a test installation, which was tested only on a few models. Possible errors (Armbian will not boot) when you are working on unverified models which used non-standard distribution of partitions in the eMMC. Therefore, be sure to back up the "ddbr" utility before running the scripts.

Thanks for the recommendation. I am in no way a developer, just an interested tester and tinkerer. It just blows my mind that you can make a full blown desktop suitable for everyday use out of these cheap commodity TV boxes.
Based on your glowing reports on the RK3399 I have sprung for a Magicsee N6 Max (~$82 on sale Aliexpress). I'll report on my adventures with it once it arrives

You have to run "sudo apt upgrade" and not only update.
If no kernel upgrade is proposed, you may have to download the deb file from Oleg's yandex repository: https://yadi.sk/d/pHxaRAs-tZiei/5.77/deb
But be careful, you may have to check that the new kernel support is as good as your current one. You can try just to burn latest image and if everything works as you expect, you can then come back to your current version and install the deb files.

Perhaps in the original Armbian uses its own logic of designation of the cores and the system being built I do not pretend to be true, but I try to stick to the logic of the Linux systems and "adult" distributions. In them, "default" means stable, proven, reliable in use, recommended for the average user. "DEV" is a future system that is being developed , can be improved, but can potentially contain bugs and is recommended for advanced users. "Next" is the analogy of the symbol of the Linux kernel, i.e. the image of the "next" Armbian uses the core of the "NEXT" Linux. So less confusion when comparing the user designations of the image and the kernel, which it has.

PS I do not impose anything on anyone, it is only my personal opinion.

It should be. u-boot-2018 does not support USB Burn Tool (I warned all about this). Also, u-boot-2018 can not run external systems from USB media, you need to use only the SD card. You should only write u-boot-2018 to eMMC when you know exactly what you need it for. For other cases, you need to use the installation with the preservation of the standard u-boot-2015 (use the installation script install.sh).

To make USB Burn Tool work you need to erase u-boot-2018 in eMMC. For example to run the command "dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/mmcblkX bs=1M count=4M" (Replace X with the number of your eMMC).

To anyone who needs a Linux 4.20/5.0 8189es driver, I successfully compiled one from here https://github.com/jwrdegoede/rtl8189ES_linux/

I installed the headers .deb but needed some files from source kernel,  so cloned the https://github.com/150balbes/Amlogic_s905-kernel/ and copied the scripts/mod folder to the /lib/modules/<kernel version>/build/

    Then, on the rtl8189es_linux folder

    make ARCH=arm64  KSRC=/lib/modules/<kernel version>/build/ CONFIG_POWER_SAVING=n

To install, for some reason sudo make install not worked, so I typed:

    sudo install -p -m 644 8189es.ko  /lib/modules/<kernel version>/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/
    sudo /sbin/depmod -a
    sudo modprobe 8189es

    And voilà, wifi working

I feel like in normal mini PC mode, RK3399 is faster than s912. IMHO the Real price for normal RK3399 will be around 90-130. If you have the ability, and you are not only a regular user, but also carries out the development (you version of the kernel or u-boot, etc.), I would recommend the option Khadas EDGE-V. This device can be ordered immediately with a good cooling system (radiator+ fan) and the case. In addition, EDGE-V has a number of important features that do not have TV boxes and that significantly help in the development and any experiments with the device.
