The box is a completely mess. Just read up on different forums about ppl whom have plenty of problems with one thing or the other. In addition, it's an oven with temperatures around 70C without stress testing and it's thermal throttling and reducing cpu frequency in the manner of how often people breath...  I'm sad to say that you get what you pay for :/

What driver/chip do you want to build? Your better off getting the correct kernel source from https://github.com/150balbes/Amlogic_s905-kernel (or armbian build) if its a popular driver not enabled in the current /boot/config.
Search these forum threads for build instructions.

As on a normal system, the dpkg command from the package with the new kernel. Or you build your own kernel and copy (install) new files into the system

During the installation, a regular MBR is created and then the main kernel works with eMMC, as with a conventional HDD\SSD (all utilities work as with conventional disks). If desired, after installation in eMMC, you can change partitions, add your own split and mount options.

Please note, the principle of using the button may be different. There are hardware buttons, they work correctly with Linux, there are "soft" buttons, they do not work well with Linux (supported only in Android firmware). What tasks do you plan to solve on this device ? With Tanix products I would recommend to be more careful, there may be problems with running Linux.

You will need to build the .deb files from source in order to upgrade.  I have been doing this for the last couple of months and things seem stable enough for this work fairly smoothly.  You will need to use the build environment fork from balbes150's git repository (https://github.com/150balbes/Build-Armbian).  It is quite simple to do a build from source if you have an intel based machine running Ubuntu18.04.  (Note there is one mistake in the instructions, when is says to "cd build" after "git clone https://github.com/150balbes/Build-Armbian", it should say "cd Build-Armbian")
Once you have built the .debs you can use apt to upgrade them in your installation.  Look at what packages you have installed and upgrade to the newer versions you have built.
I would recommend doing a image backup before you attempt the upgrade until you are comfortable with the process.  To make a backup, burn an Armbian image to SD or USB, boot from it and run the 'ddbr' command to backup the eMMC. Then you will have a backup image to restore from if something goes wrong during an upgrade.

Ideal for today (if you have the means\opportunity to buy it within 120-130)
Many different TV boxes passed through my hands. This model, in my opinion, is one of the best among TV boxes in terms of cost/result ratio. This is one of the rare models in which you do not need to finish anything yourself. It even universal multi-download will go directly to the firmware. This is a boring model, you will have nowhere to put your hands to improve and redo something.

    2. If you do not know how to make a copy of u-boot from a working SD card, you can ask the developers of the image for your TV box for the necessary file. It's not a big file "u-boot.bin.sd.bin". To record a working u-boot in two teams.

    dd if=u-boot.bin.sd.bin of=/dev/mmcblk0 conv=fsync bs=1 count=442

    dd if=u-boot.bin.sd.bin of=/dev/mmcblk0 conv=fsync bs=512 skip=1 seek=1

Note that the name mmcblk0 needs to be replaced with the name of your SD card in the system.

    3. There are several important files that are involved in the startup process, which are used in your Armbian image, it is better to check with the image developer. You can try to copy all files from /boot.

Updated the installation script in eMMC. Added the function of trying to automatically detect eMMC. I am interested in how this option will work on models where the EMMC name is different from others. Please note that this is a test version, it may have errors.

The new version of images of 5.91.
The script of the images amlg12 already included in the activation script of sound (started manually it is no longer necessary, at first start, the system itself needs to run).

Pay attention. Images of Odroid-N2 I combined with the images of aml-g12. Now one common image for all s905x2 s922 N2 will be released.

The performance of RK3399 is very good and if you do not play Windows games, it is able to replace the average home PC with Linux. Even without the addition of HW support for full-screen video, (in SW mode) the rk3399 works seamlessly with the 1080 desktop in all modes and without brakes. Conclusion about the unsuitability rk3399 Linux - sheer stupidity or intentional deception. But it is important to understand that to get all the performance of this powerful processor, it and the whole system needs a good cooling system and a good medium (the device from which the system starts). Only in this case rk3399 will be able to show all his abilities. For example , you can take a shitty SD card and then yell that the system is slow compared to the Android system that is run from eMMC. Or use a bad cooling system. The main disadvantage rk3399 , it is a  heat at work, but with the release of rk3588 is significantly change.

A priori, the price of a set of RPI will always be higher than the price of comparable TV box. This is an objective reality, because SbS have a number of "extra" elements and not the optimal design in comparison with the TV box. TV box is a specialized device in which everything is sharpened to perform a specific function. Therefore, it will always be cheaper than a similar "multifunctional" device. If this were not so, no manufacturer TV boxes would not have to spend time for their production, and stupidly  would take the SbS and turn it into these TV boxes.

No need to juggle and substitute concepts. Don't mix Android system development and Linux-based system development. It is a completely different direction. The main system for TV boxes is Android and it has all the necessary documentation and access to all technical resources. By the way, Your information about support for a number of ARM platforms in the main core is very outdated. Confirmation of this, the release in the near future of new images of Libreelec with a new kernel on the platforms Amlogic Rockchip and Allwiner.

You confirm that the "clean" RPi is not suitable for standard use as a TV box. And you have to spend extra money to get the necessary functionality. For example, it put the module WiFi\Bt, but there is no normal antenna, without which it will not work properly.

I see that You are very prone to distort and replace concepts. The design and parameters of RPI 1 and 2 have nothing to do with RPi 4. It is a completely different platform, having a very different thermopowers.

p.s. You are always trying to distort the essence of the discussion, so I see no point in continuing the discussion with You.
