  1. Hi. I`ve tried it on Armbian Bionic on the M4 but it didn`t work. Rock PI 4

Hi all. I've finished my review video about the RockPi 4B. Here it is. Greetings.
  3. Hi. I haven`t tried assault cube. I suppose it would need gl drivers, and be recompiled for it to run in 1080p without a hitch. I am slowly gathering info on gaming on the rk3399 on Linux. I thought about it to open a threat here for that. Now I don`t need to anymore It should be very able, but we need the right persons for that to do some work. I can say that DosBox works great, so thousands of games there. With RetroArch the 8-bit and 16-bit consoles run perfect. No good N64, playstation, psp... Here again we need drivers and cores made for the RK3399. Many of the Linux games work ok, but they all need optimization. You can even play most on the Odroid C2, a lot better than now on the RK3399. That`s a lot less poweful board, but better optimized games. If the Odroid N1 would have been sold, then the situation would have been a lot better. They`ve got Meveric who does an amazing job optimizing games for the Odroids. If he would do that for the RK3399... On Android you can play playstation and n64, and many more games that run perfect. But I`m allergic to Android. If anyone has more info on what works well, and how to improve things. Please all share it here.
  4. And is it only with BOINC that it crashes? What kind of crash? Try another heavy load and see if it also does it.
  5. Is it with every board the same behaveriour? Sorry if I ask again, you did try another short power cable? A 4A power supply is worth nothing when using a bad cable. When running at 1.5Ghz/2Ghz it uses 0.5A more (2A vs 1.5A). So a bad cable could be affected a lot more. Do you have logs? What is the crash? Does it reboot? Does it hang? Does it still show anything on HDMI? Is it only when running BOINC? Is it only BOINC that crashes? All I can say is I never had a crash at 1.5Ghz/2Ghz with Armbian Bionic. Even not when it was underpowered. I hope you'll find it, I bed you're going to have a lot more performance at 1.5Ghz/2Ghz.
  6. Have you tried it with Firefox, just drag the video file into firefox. My 1080p videos all run fine with that. Also vlc and smplayer do well for me. It depends on file type too. You have to configure the video driver 4k is only about 4fps, but 1080p plays great with me. Maybe if you have a 4k display, put it in 1080p. 4k eats a lot resources. I only have 1080p displays, so I have no experience with 4k. Here`s how I`m able to play 1080p files. There are others that work, baven`t tried them alll. VLC-> tools -> preferences -> Video -> Output -> x11 video output SMPlayer -> Options -> preferences -> video -> Output Driver -> choose X11
  7. I hope you`ll get somewhere. It would be good for everybody. I`ve got multiple RK3399 boards, I want them to do well. But for what I need they`re already the best(video editing, desktop use, arduino programming, ...) A bit a pitty there`s not more effort from the SoC makers. But they do what earns them money. Linux use on these chips is only a small portion of the use. So many don`t care much. Thank god for Armbian, a great job in making these boards usefull for everybody. All I can find are these documents. Maybe you`ve missed something. https://lwn.net/Articles/765312/ http://opensource.rock-chips.com/wiki_RK3399 https://patchwork.kernel.org/cover/10584089/ https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromiumos/third_party/kernel/+/chromeos-4.4/drivers/media/platform/rockchip-vpu/ https://github.com/rockchip-linux/mpp https://github.com/rockchip-linux/video https://github.com/rockchip-linux/rk-qt-video If you find anything, please let us know. It would be great. I`m not skilled enough to do the work. I used to be a programmer in an earlier life. Worked from my 15th till 19 as programmer in a big speech recognition company. But it all went broke, I lost my job, no school degree and thousands other jobless programmers... So I lost interest. 20 years later I regret not keeping up. With Linux I can`t seem to get an insight. I love Linux, and don`t like Windows. But at least Windows is super easy to program for. Cheers
  8. There is no SBC that can do what an NVidia Shield can. Those cost $200 and have one of the biggest companies behind it. No SBC maker can put so much resources into it. I do agree that a lot must improve. And I'm sure this will improve. But my experiences with many/most other boards are a lot worse than with the RK3399 boards. With Firefox you can watch 1080p video, but surfing is better with Vivaldi browser. There are different video players that work fine. With this you should be able to watch 4K in Linux. I haven't tried it yet, gst-launch-1.0 uridecodebin uri=file:///usr/local/test.mp4 ! rkximagesink Although I hate it, but Android does a good job with media, but as desktop it's awful. I use my M4 as 2nd desktop and I'm able to do everything I need, but it's still not perfect;
  9. Yes I have. I like my XU4 for gaming and for rendering. It may be faster than the C2, but it`s not as versitile. I use the C2 as a laptop powered by a power bank and a 7" display. It does everything right. It`s power efficient, doesn`t overheat, very fast when overclocked to 1.75Ghz and ram to 1104Mhz. Software is great. Perfect Youtube playback, I used it a lot for video editing and rendering when traveling. None of the other SBC`s do so well in all these things. While ths also the oldest design. But the C2 isn`t perfect. It has troubles with a display resolution of 1080p or higher. My use cases are different of that of most other people. For many high resolutions are more important. Then the C2 isn`t a good choice. It`ll stay my laptop until I find another that is faster, as small and light and doesn`t overheat. Cheers.
NicoD Translation Hi. This Operating System is still new. I hope these shortcomings will be resolved. So far, I can not recommend it for a security camera, and there are better devices for a headless server. All tho, I believe it's a nice board. I hope it'll improve quickly. Greetings.
  11. Hi again @TohaX Do you work for FriendlyArm? I seem to experience a few issues with the image. On-board wifi doesn't work, wifi dongles do work. It runs a lot hotter than 4.14. Where it ran fine without a heatsink and fan, it now needs a heatsink + fan to have the same performance. It reached 80°C with a short 7z benchmark. With npi-config I can't change the cpu frequency to 1.2Ghz. It does work with cpufreq-set. I didn't have much better results with mjpg_streamer. Still 7fps in 720p, 2fps in 1080p and 22fps in 480p. I haven't put much time and effort into it yet. I need to re-check and compare everything to be sure. If you do work for FriendlyArm, could you please give me an email address that I can contact with my findings? Thank you, greetings. NicoD
  12. About time. Thanks for the info. And it's Arm64. I'll check it out, maybe I can make a video about it. Cheers
  13. I'm not sure about this. i'm just guessing. Did you try Putty? There serial connection. Serial name : /dev/ttyACM0 Baut rate : 115200 (or another baut rate) It looks like you need a serial connection, but I'm not an expert (in nothing)
  14. Super. Thank you very much. I`ll try it tonight. Greetings, NicoD

    NanoPI M4

When you are using a bad cable. Because Armbian is clocked higher(what I like), it uses more power. 2A instead of 1.5A with FriendlyDesktop. So the undervoltage is bigger when using a bad cable + Armbian. It`s just a fact Igor. I`m not talking bad about Armbian. The reason is a bad cable, but with FriendlyDesktop the problem is a lot less. I don`t know if this is the problem here, but if we don`t measure, we don`t know. Cheers

You need a USB voltmeter. They are cheap and easy to find. Something like this. Just put it into a usb port, and it will show the voltage. If it's 5V while the cpu is maxed out, and maybe a 1A load on the USB, then you're ok, if it's a lot less. Then it's no good for powering a hard drive.

You can't power 3.5" HDD's with this board. You have to power them seperate. They use 12V and 5V together. And they use a lot of power when starting them. Only 2.5" drives can be powered with the USB3. It is written on your hard drive what voltages it needs. Greetings

Hi. Are you using Armbian? Are you using the cable from FriendlyArm? There is a problem with undervoltage when you are using a bad cable and Armbian. When I do not use the short cable from them, and I use Armbian, with a load of 1A on the USB ports. Then the voltage goes under 4V. Put a voltmeter in your USB3 port to see if your voltage is stable. If not, get a better cable. Also, the M4 it's max power consumption without anything connected is 2A with Armbian. So 2 more Amps and you'll have problems. Are you powering the HDD's with the M4? Are they 2.5" or 3.5"? Check your voltages on the board, check your consumption out the power adapter.

I don`t know if the M4`s heatsink would fit. I don`t know where you can buy their heatsink. I can show pictures. Maybe you could mail the seller for info. https://ibb.co/bzKLVL https://ibb.co/gmRCc0

It can be powered with 5V too. I`ve tried with my powerbank. It also has got a m.2 nvme port, faster ram, raspberry pi camera and display compatible CSI/DSI(M4 is propriotary), 2xUSB3 ports each have a controller(m4 4 ports over 2 controllers) + 2x usb2 on a seperate controller, ... So the desing is amazing. It uses everything the SoC has to the fullest. It depends on where you buy it how much it is. I now got both the M4 and RockPi4B. The M4 has a way better heatsink. But otherwise the RockPi4B out performs the M4 in everything while clocked the same. It`s even almost as fast @ 1.4Ghz/1.8Ghz vs the M4 @ 1.5Ghz/2Ghz. A better heatsink is available. I advice to buy that if you would buy one. Cheers.

Hi. I often power my sbc`s with a power bank. I`ve got multiple powerbanks. The ones I use the most are RavPower 26800mAh. Works great with that. Yours seems to have a normal output over the Type-C port : USB Type-C port: 5V/3A It should work just fine with that. You`ll need a cable with 2x type C. There`s now a new SBC, RockPi4. Also RK3399, same form factor. But with smart charge and pd. http://rockpi.org/ I`m now researching it. Great architecture. But it`s very new, so many bugs in software. These RK3399 boards may be the size of a raspberry pi, but they need a big heatsink to be useful, so they are heavy, and not that compact. I use an Odroid C2 for laptop with a 7" display and a ravpower powerbank. This is more compact/lighter. I`m thinking of how to use an RK3399 board for this, but haven`t got a solution yet. The heatsink is on the bottom, so it needs airflow...

    Rock PI 4

My Rock Pi 4B arrived today. I'm impressed by it. Very well designed. Only bad point I've found until now is that the power LED is too bright. Everything I've tested until now seems to work. On-board audio is no problem and very stable voltage on the USB ports. Some things the M4 does a bit less. For who's interested here's my data until now. Debian armhf ------------ Chromium+Firefox not working. Install Vivaldi browser : wget https://downloads.vivaldi.com/stable/vivaldi-stable_1.13.1008.34-1_armhf.deb sudo apt install gdebi Open gdebi package installer, click open, go to Home folder and choose the vivaldi-stable.... Click install Youtube playback ---------------- Vivaldi : Best on 1080p 50% lost frames No zram-config/zram-tools in repo's : Manual configuration should work Temperatures ------------ No fan idle : 50°C No fan max load : 90°C throttle With fan idle : 37°C With fan max load : 76°C Power consumption ----------------- Idle with fan : 0.26A @ 9.14V = 2.3W Maxed out with fan : 1A @ 9.11V = 9.11W Very stable 5V on USB. With 1A load on USB + maxed out CPU + 5V fan it remains stable at 5V Blender BMW 1080p ----------------- armhf Debian : 1h58m04s SBC-Bench --------- No fan - small heatsink : http://ix.io/1uP8 With fan - small heatsink : http://ix.io/1uPr + Raspi compatible MIPI CSI/DSI + M.2 slot for NVME SATA + USB3 ports each have a seperate controller - Too bright power LED/Check if it can be accessed - High throttle temp 90°C - SD-card sticks out a lot Difference with Model A ----------------------- Model A : No WIFI No PoE Difference with NanoPi M4 ------------------------- RockPi 4 : Has M.2 slot USB3 ports have seperate controllers CSI/DSI are RPI compatible LPDDR4 Powered with USB Type C PD 2.0, 9V/2A, 12V/2A, 15V/2A, 20V/2A NanoPi M4 : Has a better stock heatsink(there are bigger heatsinks for the RPI4B) CSI/DSI are proprietary DDR3 Powered with 5V
  23. Great job. Now that's a "cool" SBC. That's 10°C less than mine at 1.8Ghz. Can't you run at 2Ghz now? Mine is 54°C maxed on 1.8Ghz with fan, no copper shim. At 2Ghz it's 65°C. So I expect you would be able to run it at 1.5Ghz/2Ghz at around 55°C. A very acceptable temperature.
  24. You can see it positive, but also negative. For example... First these twins are human lab rats. We don't know enough of the process to ensure their health. Taking away that gen (that prevents HIV from attacking the system) makes them voulnerable to other diseases. We know this from many people who don't have this gen. But those people got so on a natural way. Second. Is this something what will devide the world a lot more? People who can affort it will modify their baby's in their benefit. This will make them "better" than "normal" people, and they may believe that too. We all know what happens when people think they are better than others. Third. Should we even do this? Don't we first need to find out what the effect will be on the long term. These changes will also be present in their children. They have children with others also with modified dna. We don't know how these will mix. What will become of them? Will they still be human? What with the mistakes the gen programmers will make? We all know programmers or far from perfect. Just a thought. It's one person making the choice for the world to do this. Now the genie is out of the bottle. The debate has gotten useless. I don't care much, too old to be able to profit from it(I'm born since a while). And by the time there could be problems because of it I'll be sleeping under the ground. Cheers.
