Werner got a reaction from NicoD in Minor changes not worth making noise in announcements
"Advertisments" (you know the red text mentioning providing logs, buy swag ecetera...) are no longer visible to donators and moderators.
Also working on a dark theme for the mentioned groups above. @NicoD you might want to try it

You can build a new kernel package from master branch using the build script. This will include @5kft's revert commit.
Or you get lucky a find a matching package here: https://beta.armbian.com/

Fixed boot sector size, luksFormat command. Removed outdated image downloading and unpacking instructions.
Tested on SD and eMMC; Orange Pi PC2 and RockPi 4; Bionic legacy, Focal legacy and Buster mainline images.
Instead of this tutorial, users are now encouraged to use my automated script, which does things in a better, more up-to-date way:
git clone https://github.com/mmgen/mmgen-geek-tools

Werner reacted to chewitt in Information for users of TV boxes on the Amlogic platform
Ahh, that would bump our figures too. LibreELEC's greatest advances over the years have been fueled by people who were unemployed, soon-to-be unemployed, or on long-term sick-leave. I had high hopes for the pandemic driving a creative spurt but we seem to have scraped by without anyone falling victim (as nerds, we're too good at social distancing).

This also includes the financial loss in time volunteering to the project while these skills could be used to earn real money in the same time but decide not to.

Werner reacted to Povl H. Pedersen in Information for users of TV boxes on the Amlogic platform
If what balbes150 is doing is just dropping support, then everything is fine with me. Forked what I believe are the relevant github projects.
My current boxes are running fine, but really wanted an upgrade before moving more onto it. I have 3 S905x3 boxes BTW.
If balbes150 is pulling everything offline, and releasing intentionally destructive builds, as I read it, then it is bad.
Now, Amlogic is an american company, and I really would expect them to fork over some money to help Armbian. They likely spent money getting Android running.
I would like everybody to reach out to Amlogic, and try to have them send money in the direction of Armbian. I guess that is the easiest way to get more support. The cheap chine copycats likely do not want to put money in that direction.
Personally, I buy TV boxes because they are way better value for money than the Pi 4. For less money I get a faster CPU, I get eMMC onboard, I get hardware crypto support (Raspberry foundation did not license that), I get a box, and I get a PSU. So the TV boxes are way better value for money.
Now, if the Armbian project would recommend brands or models of TV boxes (they seems to be best value for money due to mass market production), I would plan that for future purchases.
Maybe some vendor (Beelink whatever ?) would be willing to contribute money for Armbian support.
For me, I need 64-bit, 4GB memory, 1 Gbit, ethernet, preferable WiFi, quad-core - good performing CPU not too hot, Hardware crypto, USB 3.0. Don't really care about graphics/sound, as they run headless. And I can do without the I/O of the Pi, using ESP32 for sensor integration. OrangePi, Odroid C4 etc are valid options. But way more expensive. Have some hot running, not too good performing OrangePi devices. Only using one for my 3D printer.
I likely do not have the skills and surely not the time to take over support. But as long as we have the current release to start from, then I am happy. Then I can always look at upgrading the kernel if I need. Otherwise, I will just have a stable running box (I hope) for many years to come. Saving the environment lots of CO2 compared to my old AMD x86 based server.

I started writing a script for the topic "how to contribute".
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1oN2GnhN5uo57GTNSgKqeadt1Rn1pSHjfiEpIeyqG0aY/edit?usp=sharing
It is more or less finished but has still quite some rough edges. Though it is good enough to collect feedback about the covered topics.

Werner got a reaction from stateoftrance in Does Armbian support USB webcam?
The question that needs to be ask is "does my webcam run on Linux OOB?". If that question an be answered with yes, then it is most likely that it will run on Armbian as well.
I have adjusted the topic title to be more precise.

Hello. Sorry for the no-show at the IRC meeting, got the COVID and that precise day I was moving back to my home after being discharged. I'm better now, thanks be to God.
I have been investigating, and got to make a set of multimedia packages that will work with Buster or Focal. I think it is a good opportunity to close AR-151, and give to users some stable and well-proven multimedia solution, while exploring newer options as Mainline or Wayland for next releases.
The solution would be simply a set of packages, with some base meta-package to install them all, and do the necessary configs. We could then choose to install it at build time, or make it an option in Armbian-config, or just leave it for the user to do an "apt install armbian-multimedia-xxxx".
I think I can have the binary packages ready by the freeze date (this weekend), at least for some boards (RK3288, RK3399 and probably also RK3328 and XU4). @lanefu Do you think we can include it in this release?

Also available, install armbian desktop.
Install Panfrost on Armbian.
What is Armbian...
And a few more like install on TV-box.
I've plans for a video about armbian-config. Also a video for Windows users using Armbian for the first time(differences, how to install software, the filesystems,...).
The next SBC I'll review is the RockPiS. So installing headless was on the list too. Should've done it before with the NanoPi DUO2, but never got to make a video about it.
I've got data for tons of videos. But not enough time to put it all in a video. I don't have a smooth workflow. Takes me ages to film, edit, render, upload and process a video. I often wonder if it's worth my time(no it isn't, only costs me money).
I do need to fill my little spare time with something, in between all my other hobbies/jobs.
I would love it to be able to earn a bit of money with this so I could put in more time. But I don't see that happening soon. I ain't ETA-Prime(Cause I do put time into research ).

If the kernel is trapping/crashing for some reason then this would likely be shown on the console, which could help provide a clue as to what might be going on...

Hi all.
@Werner and I have been working on an instruction video on how to install Armbian headless on your SBC.
Here it is.

Werner reacted to Pali in How to make ESPRESSObin v7 stable?
Hello! We found out that stability issue is not specific to Espressobin V7, but also for other boards with Armada 3720 SOC. And mentioned patch from Victor Gu which sets minimal voltage to 1.108V for 500 MHz and lower speeds seems to fixes this issue.
Marek prepared new patches for mainline kernel which include that Victor's patch and other fixes for armada 3720 cpufreq driver. See link:
https://lore.kernel.org/linux-arm-kernel/20201009125711.0176752a@kernel.org/
Could you please test these patches if they finally fix also your instability issues on Espressobin V7?

Werner reacted to bozden in Need help with building a gateway (OPi PC 2, Armbian, PiHole etc)
I feel so dumb !
After many hours of tcpdump'ing and log tailing I found my mistake... Just to record this unfortunate event:
I first installed pihole DHCP for the exterior network (192.168.100.0/24) then moved to home-network (192.168.64.0/24) side.
On the web interface there is a "Router (gateway) IP address" and my router is in at 192.168.100.2 - I left it as it is That should be on the same subnet of course Changed it and it worked...
Sorry for your time

There was an issue with the torrent network which lead into adding torrents to the queue that were no longer existing. This has been fixed. If you have setup your transmission-daemon with the update script mentioned at the first post you will receive the fix automatically or already might have.
