  1. @RockBianthanks for the suggestion. My armbianEnv.txt has a few more things in it, but those lines do already exist. /var/log/alternatives.log { monthly rotate 12 compress delaycompress missingok notifempty create 644 root root } verbosity=7 console=serial earlycon=on extraargs=ignore_loglevel earlyprintk usbstoragequirks=0x2537:0x1066:u,0x2537:0x1068:u rootdev=UUID=a58334e6-208e-452f-b332-c0907a96f03f rootfstype=ext4
  2. Hi All, I ran Armbian at orangepi r1 plus. Details: Firstly, OrangePi R1 Plus is booted with Armbian_21.02.3_Nanopi-r2s_buster_current_5.10.21. But I got the error: Begin: Running /scripts/local-block ... done. Begin: Running /scripts/local-block ... done. done. Gave up waiting for root file system device. Common problems: - Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline) - Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?) - Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev) ALERT! UUID=1430eaac-3ff0-465a-a7b0-66b51608ccd1 does not exist. Dropping to a shell! (initramfs) All Boot Output: https://pastebin.pl/view/c23b4566 After that, Orange Pi R1 Plus is successfully booted with Orangepir1plus_2.1.0_debian_buster_server_linux5.8.18. I inserted another sd card (it has Armbian_21.02.3_Nanopi-r2s_buster_current_5.10.21 image) to the R1 Plus and mounted. I copied /boot/dtb/rockchip/rk3328-orangepi-r1plus.dtb and paste into the sd card. I changed /boot/armbianEnv.txt as follows: # more /boot/armbianEnv.txt verbosity=1 bootlogo=false overlay_prefix=rockchip fdtfile=rockchip/rk3328-orangepi-r1plus.dtb rootdev=UUID=1430eaac-3ff0-465a-a7b0-66b51608ccd1 rootfstype=ext4 console=serial usbstoragequirks=0x2537:0x1066:u,0x2537:0x1068:u Orange Pi R1 Plus is booted. But it has some issues. The device did not detect 2nd ethernet and first ethernet is not working properly. Orange Pi R1 Plus Armbian Boot Output: https://pastebin.pl/view/ba0f9789 I will work on it.
  3. Hello, I just stumbled upon this topic, after I spend few hours trying to run the current Armbian (buster) I downloaded from the Sopine64 Product page. I got the same error: Begin: Running /scripts/local-block ... done. Begin: Running /scripts/local-block ... done. Begin: Running /scripts/local-block ... done. done. Gave up waiting for root file system device. Common problems: - Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline) - Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?) - Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev) ALERT! UUID=b9866ace-f260-437c-9794-8e1a363a3c71 does not exist. Dropping to a shell! (initramfs) The UUID in the armbianEnv.txt did match, so my conclusion is, that there is something wrong with the current linked image. I have a Pine64 LTS which is identical with the Sopine board. Downloading the Armbian_20.11.7 image did solve my problems.
  4. thanks for your fast reply @lanefu!! I have this extra info. I am surprised bc it seems that the initial config want to expose 640x480 (without doing it manually) but something disallow it. if its a soc limitation that could be resolved by software (kernel dev) or not I need to know it. oh, it says fb. maybe I should try the other one.. how i switch to that one? also, do you know how to shift to gbm from x11? i mean on rpi4 we can just do ctrl plus F4. maybe there is a way to trigger something similar. usually gbm its a better performing environment for certain opengl apps. pi@rockpi-4b:~$ cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log [ 19.350] X.Org X Server 1.20.9 X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0 [ 19.350] Build Operating System: Linux 4.15.0-130-generic aarch64 Ubuntu [ 19.350] Current Operating System: Linux rockpi-4b 5.10.21-rockchip64 #21.02.3 SMP PREEMPT Mon Mar 8 01:05:08 UTC 2021 aarch64 [ 19.350] Kernel command line: root=UUID=f43869ab-391c-4c4b-98c0-2663c796d171 rootwait rootfstype=ext4 bootsplash.bootfile=bootsplash.armbian console=ttyS2,1500000 console=tty1 consoleblank=0 loglevel=1 ubootpart=b2f51975-01 usb-storage.quirks=0x2537:0x1066:u,0x2537:0x1068:u,0x1058:0x25a2:u cgroup_enable=cpuset cgroup_memory=1 cgroup_enable=memory swapaccount=1 [ 19.351] Build Date: 17 January 2021 09:13:31AM [ 19.351] xorg-server 2:1.20.9-2ubuntu1.2~20.04.1 (For technical support please see http://www.ubuntu.com/support) [ 19.351] Current version of pixman: 0.38.4 [ 19.351] Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org to make sure that you have the latest version. 6. Hi thanks for writing up this howto, unfortunately I can't get it to work. I have a RockPi 4c, Crucial P1 M.2 1TB NVME. I also tried squishykid's workaround. It seems that my nvme is not recognized. After the "Starting kernel ... " message the boot process stops in a busybox shell. The error message says that UUID=xxxx does not exist. Too bad. So, there's an NVME you can add to your Doesn't Work list. Cheers Laci
  7. Yesterday 1 of my 3 NanoPi Neo2 didnt boot complete anymore. Because I had i the last time - I thought that the internal 2.5" HDD has died and couldnt mounted anymore from /etc/fstab Today I checked the 2.5" HDD externally and its fine So I connected a TTL-RS232 for the boot-output and did get: Begin: Running /scripts/local-block ... done. Begin: Running /scripts/local-block ... done. Begin: Running /scripts/local-block ... done. Begin: Running /scripts/local-block ... done. Begin: Running /scripts/local-block ... done. done. Gave up waiting for root file system device. Common problems: - Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline) - Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?) - Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev) ALERT! UUID=47f29e2a-b4bd-451d-88 does not exist. Dropping to a shell! (initramfs) The NanoPi Neo2 isnt finding the UUID for the root-filesystem = my sdcard? I did pu the card in a reader on my other NanoPi Neo2 and used blkid to check the UUID - and did get: /dev/sdb1: UUID="47f29e2a-b4bd-451d-88a9-35998f669cd1" TYPE="ext4" PARTUUID="53e18e13-01" in /etc/fstab there is UUID=47f29e2a-b4bd-451d-88 and here at the "remote" system UUID=47f29e2a-b4bd-451d-88a9-35998f669cd1 Why and when has this UUID extended/expanded (and why isnt it booting with the short version?)? So I did put the new/longer UUID for root in the /etc/fstab on the sdcard and put it back in the half-booting NanoPi Neo2. armbianmonitor -u System diagnosis information has been uploaded to http://ix.io/2KOz Now this Neo2 is booting fine. Should I check my other 2 Neo2 and compare blkid to the /etc/fstab ? On my second (512MB) Neo2 I got the same long UUID for root: UUID=47f29e2a-b4bd-451d-88a9-35998f669cd1 / ext4 defaults,noatime,nodiratime,commit=600,errors=remount-ro 0 1 /dev/mmcblk0p1: UUID="47f29e2a-b4bd-451d-88a9-35998f669cd1" TYPE="ext4" PARTUUID="53e18e13-01" but on my third (1GB LTS) Neo2 the UUIDs didnt match and it DOES boot and mount root: UUID=47f29e2a-b4bd-451d-88a9-35998f669cd1 / ext4 defaults,noatime,nodiratime,commit=600,errors=remount-ro 0 1 /dev/mmcblk0p1: UUID="4e972167-ea53-4c61-9d49-a67b1f839f5f" TYPE="ext4" PARTUUID="d2f285f3-01" [EDIT] edited /etc/fstab to 4e972167-ea53-4c61-9d49-a67b1f839f5f as seen in blkid and it boots also perfect (maybe a differnt u-boot in "flash"?) System diagnosis information has been uploaded to http://ix.io/2KON Is it normal that all 3 Neo2 got 47f29e2a-b4bd-451d-88a9-35998f669cd1 as root-UUID? (UUID of the flash image - should this change after resize?) The 1GB Neo2 does use a Focal-dev-image and the other use a Buster-dev-image.
  8. I have put together an answer that worked for me. No, I don't want to fund Armbian developers to write SATISFACTORY backup program/s. Firstly, very capable multi-purpose backup program suites already exist for Linux and secondly, this particular backup problem is too deep in the bits and bytes - especially given the clues you have given me. To produce the micro SD card I have described there are a number of simple steps, all executed from the command line interface. The following is quite wordy and tries to be appropriate for users who are not familiar with Linux command line and its suite of utilities. 1. Find or produce an at-least-minimally-set-up appropriate Armbian system on a micro SD card, preferably the same version of Armbian that you are running on your EMMC memory. We are going to extract the bootloader off this SD card and it needs to be appropriate to the Armbian on the EMMC. Alternatively, you may be able to download a binary image, if so, skip steps 3 and 4. 2. Log in as root (for preference) on a command-line terminal to your EMMC-centred PC+ by some means. If you do not log in as root, you will have to preface most (all) of the typed commands given below with 'sudo' and re-enter your password several times. 3. Insert this SD card into the OrangePi PC Plus that you wish to clone the Armbian from. Wait a few seconds for Armbian to recognise it then type 'ls /dev/mmcblk*' Armbian should respond with something like: /dev/mmcblk0 /dev/mmcblk1 /dev/mmcblkboot1 /dev/mmcblk0p1 /dev/mmvblk1boot0 /dev/mmcblk1p1 mmcblk0 is the SD card and mmcblk1 is the EMMC memory. 4. Plug a USB stick into one of the USB2 ports on the board. Armbian will recognise this as /dev/sda with a file system in /dev/sda1 and mount it at /media/<USERNAME> where <USERNAME> is some username that you were logged in as the last time you plugged in a USB stick. 5. Type the command 'dd count=8192 if=/dev/mmcblk0 of=/media/<USERNAME>/bootloader.img (do not add any spaces around the equals signs) and the bootloader binary image will be copied off the SD card onto the USB stick in less than a minute. 6. Having a copy of the required bootloader on the USB stick, if you do not wish to over-write the contents of the SD card, replace it with one at least as large as the EMMC memory. Type the command 'fdisk /dev/mmcblk1' then press 'p' and 'Enter' then 'q' and 'Enter'. Be very careful to not do anything else here because this program CAN destroy your EMMC system if mishandled. Armbian on my PC+ displayed: Device Boot Start End Sectors Size Id Type /dev/mmcblk1p1 8192 15117183 15108992 7.2G 83 Linux 7. Using 'End' sector number, now over-write the SD card with command: 'dd count=15117183 if=/dev/mmcblk1 of=/dev/mmcblk0' Note that we are copying the file system plus the first 8192 sectors which contains the bootloader and the master boot record (MBR). We are going to write the bootloader we saved earlier into that low space and need to leave room. 8. Copy the bootloader obtained earlier into that space of 8192 sectors at the start of the SD card: type 'dd count=8192 if=/media/<USERNAME>/bootloader.img' In the process we will over-write the first sector on the SD card which contains MBR and the partition table with the MBR from from the earlier SD card which will contain data almost certainly irrelevant to the file structure we originally copied from the EMMC. 9. The next step is to again copy data from the EMMC to the new SD card, limiting the copy to just the first sector, restoring the MBR and partition table data to correctly duplicate that structure to be relevant to the partition we earlier copied from the EMMC. type 'dd count=1 if=/dev/mmcblk1 of=/dev/mmcblk0' 10. The final step is to mount the newly prepared SD card and edit the UUID in its Boot folder. type 'mount /dev/mmcblk0p1 /mnt' This attaches the SD partion to the /mnt folder. type 'cd /mnt/boot' make our area of work the default. type 'blkid | grep mmcblk0p1 >newUUID.txt' This saves the UUID we must use into the file /mnt/boot/armbianEnv.txt 'cat newUUID.txt' will show the saved UUID and more eg: /dev/mmcblk0p1: UUID="48a407c4-ca6e-4a21-ac94-71a9eac17295" TYPE="ext4" PARTUUID="709ff8b6-01" You must now edit the file ./armbianEnv.txt with an editor such as 'nano' (I prefer joe) and replace the UUID in the line such as the following with the one obtained by the above method. rootdev=UUID=828b3b50-226d-4f90-b607-2bccb4031c24 All done. I suggest that the next operation should be to save an image of the SD card just created onto the USB stick, eg: dd count=15117183 if=/dev/mmcblk0 of=/media/<USERNAME>/ArmbianSystem.img unmount the USB stick eg: umount /dev/sda1 and the new SD card eg: umount /dev/mmcblk0p1 then make a backup copy of that image by your usual file backup procedures. If you have another Orange Pi PCplus, you should plug the new SD card in and test it before packing up and opening a well-earned beer. Peter. PS. The above assumes an 8192-sector-sized bootloader at the start of the EMMC and SD cards. I have seen some SD cards formatted by Windows for which this is not the case. You should check for this using fdisk before proceeding.
  9. Unfortunately later kernels (just tried rk322x 5.8.14 debs from apt.armbian, but also 5.x images) drop to initramfs, which I do not how to resolve; Loading, please wait.... 10. /boot is big enough, because armbian is only using 1 partition (on my install) and Iam using a 8GB MicroSDCard After using a TTL-serial-dongle I did found that kernel 5.9.0rc2 had give me the 2 following problems: 1.) is seems to be searching for a UUID/BKLID which is too short: Its searching for f17c5ebe-dc6c-4c52-831e-f2265 but the full name is f17c5ebe-dc6c-4c52-831e-f226539501a5 which was correct in /boot/armbianEnv.txt and /etc/fstab Gave up waiting for root file system device. After that the Neo2 did boot from this card, but couldnt find the NAS-HDD which is connected via USB (USB3-SATA on USB2.0 port) 2.) the kernel 5.9.0rc2 couldnt load the dtb-overlays (also while now booting from the card and root 7 is there, but the overlays doenst seem to be compatibe): Applying kernel provided DT overlay sun50i-h5-cpu-clock-1.0GHz-1.1v.dtbo failed on fdt_overlay_apply(): FDT_ERR_NOTFOUND 504 bytes read in 6 ms (82 KiB/s) Applying kernel provided DT overlay sun50i-h5-usbhost1.dtbo failed on fdt_overlay_apply(): FDT_ERR_BADMAGIC base fdt does did not have a /__symbols__ node make sure you've compiled with -@ 504 bytes read in 5 ms (97.7 KiB/s) Applying kernel provided DT overlay sun50i-h5-usbhost2.dtbo failed on fdt_overlay_apply(): FDT_ERR_BADMAGIC base fdt does did not have a /__symbols__ node make sure you've compiled with -@ Error applying DT overlays, restoring original DT Because booting the 5.9.0rc2 did work - I reinstalled the kernel 5.8.3 (Image, u-boot, dtb, firmware and config) via dpkg. After reboot the complete system is working like before without reinstalling I only deleted some kernel 5.4.x-dtb directorys from /boot Here some more TTL-Boot-log for your information: Dont know why kernel 5.9.0rc2 was booting in the TTL-Log with U-Boot 2019.04-armbian (Nov 18 2019 - 21:52:14 +0100) Is there more to do as installing the new u-boot.deb? 12. Hello, is this issue fixed now ? I'm using OrangePi One Plus server, and three days ago I did apt -y upgrade. After that, it wont boot -- drops to initramfs ( UUID does not exist ). I did a peek here, and tried to qemu chroot to sdcard from a Focal running VM, and issued " update-initramfs -u ", but that did not solve my problem -- still wont boot. 12 hours ago I restored to a month old backup, and it booted fine ofc, but then I tried to upgrade again, as there is no more warning about broken Focal images, but sure enough, dropped to initramfs Is there something else I can try ?
  13. (initramfs) I had installed the Armbian system using the script "nand-sata-install" and configured some server applications such as Apache, ISPConfig, Mariadb etc . , and Docker ... and it seemed to work out well. However, sometimes the system have had failures during starting with the boot message as described above. I could turn off the machine and restarted it (hard reboot), but now it is still blocked. I checked the microSD Card file system (ext4) with GParted. Unfortunately it did not work. Nothing has changed. See below my previous topic about the Cubieboard3 and the RAID subboard documents. Thanks in advance for your enlightning reply.
  14. When changing ROOTFS, you need to change BOTH places in /boot/armbianEnv.txt as well as /etc/fstab, otherwise you get this "ALERT! UUID=... doesn't exist" ...
  15. Dear all, My problem: I've tried to Copy my current micro sd card(8go) to another one (32go) Copy with a virtualbox (Ubuntu with the dd command to Copy the first card to the other one) , or with gparted (Copy and past) But with all these methods the problem stay the same = no boot Error message: Gave up waiting for root file system device. 16. I've just bought two Tinkerboards S for my thesis project, and I need to install Armbian on it. I've accustomed myself with the maskrom mode and I've successfully booted the Debian TinkerOS from both the SD and the eMMC. Similarly I successfully booted Armbian from the SD but once I flash the same image on the eMMC it fails to boot, I get this output: Scanning for Btrfs filesystems Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems: - Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline) - Check rootdelay= (did the system wait for the right device?) - Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?) - Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev) ALERT! UUID=a5ccaf22-ffde-44c2-8c59-84a851f9fd90 does not exist. Dropping to shell! I've checked and /boot/armbianEnv.txt and /etc/fstab match the uuid obtained with blkid corresponding to /dev/mmcblk1p1 (the root partition on the eMMC) I've been flashing images like this for both the SD card (plugging it in the PC) and the eMMC using the microUSB cable connected to the tinkerboard: dd if=armbian_image.img of=/dev/sdX bs=4M status=progress oflag=sync I've tested these different images with same results, also building one did not change the results. Armbian_19.11.3_Tinkerboard_bionic_current_5.3.11/ Armbian_19.11.3_Tinkerboard_bionic_legacy_4.4.199_desktop/ Armbian_19.11.3_Tinkerboard_buster_current_5.3.11_minimal/ I can't find a good guide for this, I suspect it could be related to UBoot. Seems like it can't read the root partition somehow, do you guys have any idea?
  17. I did as you told: install Armbian on a new SD, bootup, create user and set passwords. After I adjust /boot/armbianEnv.txt to set UUID to my drive and then rebooted successfully. One point, because older SD was going into RO mode, I have badly installed package: initramfs-tools, and future apt upgrade were finished with an error. So I have to reinstall it by command: sudo apt install --reinstall initramfs-tools:armhf After this everything works good, thanks! UPDATE: I was a bit wrong, Kernel has some problems, this is an error when I try to run iptables: $ sudo iptables -vnL modprobe: ERROR: ../libkmod/libkmod.c:586 kmod_search_moddep() could not open moddep file '/lib/modules/4.19.57-sunxi/modules.dep.bin' modprobe: FATAL: Module ip_tables not found in directory /lib/modules/4.19.57-sunxi iptables v1.6.1: can't initialize iptables table `filter': Table does not exist (do you need to insmod?) Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded. I try this and that with update and upgrade, but helps only to re-install the same kernel via armbain-config>System>Other>choose the same Kernel as I have had before.
  18. Any hint how to try it out? I compiled the the dev branch kernel which gave me linux-5.2.y and installed the kernel .debs on a 5.90 tinkerboard armbian image, but it won't boot. ## Loading init Ramdisk from Legacy Image at 21000000 ...
